Hi! I’m Elena. I live in Brooklyn, NY and I’m a data viz designer, front-end developer and journalist. I’m currently looking for a job!
I worked for almost three years at FiveThirtyEight, where I worked on interactive projects related to politics, elections and democracy. I also created bespoke visuals and conducted data analysis for stories on changing demographics, abortion access and segregated neighborhoods. Prior to specializing in graphics, I worked as a general assignment reporter at multiple newsrooms in Texas after I graduated from UT Austin, including the Texas Tribune, the San Antonio Express News and The Texas Observer.
I have a master’s degree in Data Journalism at Columbia University, where I did my thesis on neglect in Texas nursing homes. I analyzed tens of thousands federal inspection reports, examined staffing ratios of more than 1,200 facilities, and reviewed four years of federal penalty data. The project was published in The Texas Observer’s July/August 2020 issue in the magazine’s front page.
